Tons more than just creepy critters, spiders are much more intriguing than most people notice. Most people in Knoxville are aware that not all types of spiders create webs, for example: tarantulas don’t make webs to call home, but live in little burrows in the earth|make burrows in the earth to live in, not webs. Many kinds of spiders don’t build webs, but all kinds of spiders use silk. Some build webs from their silk, but there are lots of other uses for spider silk. Spiders will use silk to hunt, fish, climb, protect eggs, or even get from one place to another!
One of the most interesting things a spider is able to do with its silk is fish. A spider fishes just like people fish, but using their silk for a line. They shoot a strand of a sticky kind of silk along the water and pull it back, seeing if they stuck a meal for dinner. Eighteen spiders have been seen fishing, including the Great Raft Spider and the Pond Wolf Spider. Other spiders can use their silk to get place to place. This is known as “ballooning,” sometimes called “kiting,” where a spider releases a strand of silk so it catches the wind, allowing the spider to move through the air. It’s more than most people realize – spiders can do lots with silk besides just making webs.
